IDEA 2004 defines an assistive technology device as "any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commerically off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of a child with a disability." There are three categories on a continum of Assistive Technology including low tech, medium tech, and high tech. Low tech devices use no electronic components and are relatively inexpensive. They are often referred to as "gadgets'. Medium tech devices are those that are in-between high tech and low tech. They are electronic in nature but are much less expensive and require less training than high tech devices. High tech devices are based on computer technology and are more complicated to operate with more training and are the most expensive.

The Assistive Technology Industry Association ("ATIA") is a not-for-profit membership organization of manufacturers, sellers and providers of technology-based assistive devices and/or services. This site explains what assistive technology is and where funding is available. This is a great resource for those considering assistive technology. http://www.atia.org/i4a/pages/index.cfm?pageid=3859
